Motor-life-may-1957

Road trip in a historic custom? Why not! The restoration of the Gil Ayala “Wild Bird” is almost complete at Yaril’s Customs in Hialeah, Florida. Once it’s finished, owner Bjørn Inge Jansson of Oslo, Norway, will be setting off for a cross-country adventure starting at Yaril’s and ending in San Francisco. He’ll be stopping at the Lonestar Round Up in Austin, Texas, Viva Las Vegas in Nevada and a number of other places in between.

Restyled by Ayala when new, the T-Bird featured a wealth of creative custom touches from nose to decklid. Highlights included a full custom frontend—complete with ’55 Pontiac bumpers, reworked headlights and a hand-formed scoop—as well as extended rear fenders with ’56 Lincoln taillights and ’54 Cad bumpers. Back in the spring of 1957, the far-out Bird landed on the cover of Motor Life.

Through the years, the car was lost, found and now it’ll be returned to its candy red livery. After Bjørn’s sojourn for the ages comes to a close, the Wild Bird will be shipped to Norway in preparation for its European debut at the Coupe Devils Rod & Kustom Bonanza.

We’ll be posting updates on our Instagram and Facebook pages as the restoration and road trip unfold. Plus, stay tuned for something special in an upcoming issue of TRJ.

We’d like to thank the staff at Kustomrama for both the heads-up about Bjørn’s trip as well as their Wild Bird research. Make sure to follow them on Instagram here and Facebook here for more historic and contemporary custom content.
